Car manufacturers and engineers spend a daunting amount of money and man hours just to give us the most fuel efficient vehicles within a reasonable price. You would expect the MPG to be at its peak from the factory, but the good news is it can be improved on easily (no rocket science) and better yet you can do it with style!
The answer: replacing your stock wheels with a lighter alternative.
The reason and benefits are simple. First of all this reduces rotational unsprung mass, the mass of the suspension, wheels or tracks (as applicable) and other components directly connected to them rather than supported by the suspension (Wikipedia,) and so your engine will be able to power your car with less effort. Second of all, a lighter wheel will move more and absorb more vibrations caused by the road surface, therefore improving ride quality as well. Last but not least, you get to choose what price, manufacturer and looks of your new wheels to make your car stand out from the norm! But keep in mind how the wheel is made (forged/cast) which will affect on the wheel's structural rigidity.
The end result: MPG improved, more comfortable ride and all done with style!
By now you may be asking how much MPG does this save on an average car? We are testing this as we speak - check back for results next week!
